23 April 2008 - 10:15Three Horses

Ladies and Gentleman, I would like to make the announcement that I am gainfully employed, at least for the short term.

Yours truly is now the company manager for an international beverage distributor in Southern Sudan.  Sounds a little impressive, no?  Well it isn’t really.  The company is myself and a driver.  I get to do everything and manage myself.  And the only beverage I am currently distributing/selling is beer.

The beer comes from Holland.  It’s called Three Horses.  Not a bad beer.  Just as good if not better than most of the beers on the market here.  That is the only problem though… there are a lot of beers on the market here.

In the seven years that I have lived in east africa, I don’t think I have ever been to a city that has so much choice when it comes to beer.  Not even in Kenya.  Here they have all the local beers from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa as well as quite a few from big manufacturers in Europe.

I have to admit I am feeling 50/50 about my new job.  Is going to be alot of work, a little pay and months away from my family.  Think that is what is making it the most difficult.  Being away from the kids and soon to be away from my wife for the next few months.  Don’t like it at all.  But what do I do?

In other news, I realized I forgot to make a very big announcement several months back.  My wife is pregnant again!  We are expecting another bouncing baby boy towards the end of July.  She has a big ol belly right now.  The pregnancy hasn’t slowed her down at all.  She is still making performances and planning a few trips before she gets very, very big.  She is hoping that in the course of the next few weeks, she can take a break, get back to Nairobi and take care of the family.  I hope she is able to get there too.

Alrighty… its now time for me to start my day.  Wish me luck, hope I sell some beer today.:)

11 April 2008 - 17:23Nimre Talata Show

Here is a video from the show we did last weekend. It was lots of fun. I got to be the “sound engineer” and don’t think I did a very good job. Have the feeling i may have blown my speakers in the process. This is also why my video isn’t so good. I was also running the camera which meant I had to run back and forth between the two. I just set the Camera in one spot and hit record and let it take whatever came across its path.

Hope you enjoy

9 April 2008 - 16:44photos!

These are a couple pictures from Mary’s performance last friday. I am working on uploading a short video of her and some other performers from the show, but my connection is really bad and I’ve spent the last few hours waiting for it to finish. Will post a link as soon as it shows up.

4 April 2008 - 12:42work would be nice…

i really want to whine and complain.  but… I’ve got better things to do.

Just quickly, is anyone out there any good at taking a very bad C.V./Resume and spicing it up with words beyond my vocabulary?  Its pushing 2 years now since I had an actual “job” and am starting to feel lots of pressure in securing something on a long term basis.

Otherwise, I am now bout two weeks in lovely Juba.  Mary is organizing a performance this evening.  This morning we are taking it a bit easy, but I am just waiting for the craziness to begin this afternoon.  Should be fun and hopefully will have a good turn out.

We are still wondering when we might go to Pibor.  Everyday we hear that it is going to be organized in the coming next few days.  Then those days pass and again it is “the day after tomorrow….”.  Maybe next week… I don’t know.:)

A final comment.  Petrol/Gas/Benzine/MoneyBurner is too expensive here.  We pay 4 sudanese pound for one liter.  Which is about 2 USD per liter.  Thats about 3.8 liters to one gallon.  So  I am paying  around  $7.50 / $7.60 per gallon.  At the moment we are managing to use about 5 liters a day.  Ouch.  And I wonder why we never have any money. :)
