Lubna Hussein was arrested in Khartoum, Sudan several weeks back for wearing trousers. Although now the government is saying, “no it wasn’t the trousers, she was just being loud and obnoxious“. That is a slight paraphrase. She faced getting 40 lashes and paying a hefty fine. The court decided to only give her the fine. Which she refused to pay.
I’m not going to go into all the details about her story. You can check the web or visit her site for more information. The point of this post is to talk about a “show of solidarity” that my wife and other Sudanese women here in Kenya are organizing to support Lubna and the stand she is taking.
On Tuesday at 9 a.m. they will gather at the office of SWAN (Sudanese Women’s Associatin Network) in Kilimani to show their support, make some statements and submit a letter to the local embassy.
They are currently trying to get the word out to as many people as they can to come and join them. So, if you are reading this, are in Kenya and have the time to spare Tuesday morning, please come.
